The sun, on that hot summer day, was burning those who were unlucky enough not to find a shady place to take shelter. Grandma under the sycamore tree was trying to hold her granddaughter in the welcoming shade of the big tree, but the child wanted to play. So she began to narrate a story with the intention of bringing her around.

She began to talk about the bridge they were looking at standing motionless ahead of them, over the waters of the artificial lake of Polyphytos. "It wasn't always like that," Grandma explained. "At first it connected the two banks of the Aliakmon river, as the lake did not exist. Years passed and a lot changed to build this bridge. First, during the Turkish occupation, it was made of metal, the allies blew it up, the Germans made it wooden, the guerrillas blew it up and the Italians built it again, and again it was made of metal. Then there was peace, and the needs of the area dictated that a hydroelectric dam should be built, which changed the whole landscape. The village relocated, moved away from the river and climbed the neighbouring hill to its present site. Technicians from all over Greece came to help build the 27 pedestals on which God-sized pillars, 55 metres each, stand, so that the 1372-metre-long road could be created. The pillars inside have water to keep the bridge from shaking."

Grandma continued the narration as her granddaughter had finally sat down in the shade of the tree, letting go of the game. "The construction started before the river water had covered the area. Residents would go under the pillars that are now covered by water and admire the construction. The soil of the river was the best material the craftsmen could find, and together with concrete, iron and steel, it connected Northern and Central Greece. A large number of the inhabitants of the surrounding villages worked for its construction. When it was completed in 1976, people came from all over the world to see it, and it was one of the largest bridges in Europe."

"However, what makes this bridge unique is not its use, but what is surrounding this bridge and the bridges that already existed in the area. When the sun set and the hillsides of the surrounding mountains were turned to a deep red colour, then out of the waters, first of the river, and now of the lake, would come fairies, and invite any handsome boy who happened to pass by to dive in and join them." Perhaps it was these fairies that the Bishop of Servia & Kozani, Ioakim, encountered when he gave the name "Neraida" that in Greek means "fairy" to the village where the grandmother lived.

The sun had begun to gradually hide behind the Pieria Mountains, giving the artificial lake Polyfytou a magical colour, that of sunset. The little girl realized that her grandmother's story was almost over and began playing again.

Across the road, the High Bridge of Servia, as it is really called, stood there as part of the natural landscape, connecting the highway between Larissa and Kozani.
